Mobissimo

Bulgaria. Not on everyone's list of top destinations, but one that is quickly becoming one of the 'gems' of European travel. Whenever you hear gem, it basically brings to mind one thing - it's cheap. THE storm had just broken, taking with it the August mugginess. I looked up from the balcony of my hotel across the dampened city of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Directly in front of me, the golden domes of the huge Aleksandr Nevsky Cathedral were set against the dark sky. Twin rainbows arced above them as though the sky itself were part of the building's design. Sofia is that kind of place.

I went through Sofia a while back. It was a distinct experience. Getting around Bulgaria was not easy, the bus system was plagued by strange timetables, spontaneous cancellations, and workers with extremely important crossword puzzles. There are private bus lines which compete with government stage coaches, but they are more expensive, rationalizing the slight price hike by including extras such as windows and shocks. Even more punishing is hearing Barbi Girl in Bulgarian on a seemingly endless Mobius cycle. You can fly to Sofia from NYC for only $771 on Mobissimo. In terms of lodging, Mobissimo has plenty of rooms for you, but be adventuresome and go sans reservations.
