As the airline industry continues to shake itself up, which is a good thing, US Airways, long thought to be the worst airline, has proposed a potential merger with Delta.

US Airways today proposed an $8 billion takeover of Delta Air Lines in a deal that would bring the Atlanta-based carrier out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and create a carrier nearly as large as No. 1 American Airlines.

The public bid to pay Delta's creditors $4 billion in cash plus US Airways stock valued at about $4 billion is hostile, for now. In effect it attempts to go around Delta management's exclusive right through Feb. 15 to lead a bankruptcy organization.

US Airways and America West have already merged, bringing together two red-headed step children and now this. This one kind of makes sense though, with main hubs in Charlotte and Atlanta, US Airways and Delta, respectively, could potentially cut out many redundant routes and streamline costs. However, this merger will not be without controversy as it will challenge both American and United. MobiBlog will keep you updated on this event.
