WEEKI WACHEE, Fla. - Nostalgia and a timely flood of donations saved the tails of the Weeki Wachee Springs mermaids a few years ago when the vintage Florida roadside attraction nearly succumbed to age and indifference.

This year is a milestone year for the City of Live Mermaids. 2007 marks the 60th Anniversary of Weeki Wachee Springs, as it was established back in 1947. In honor of this event Weeki Wachee Springs announces their upcoming, first annual Pageant event, “Miss Weeki Wachee 2007”, to be held in Weeki Wachee’s world famous Underwater Mermaid Theater on March 24, 2007.

I actually went to see these girls perform a couple of times while living in Tampa and am still having dreams of these mermaids tumbling around in underwater ecstacy. Support your local roadside attraction and check these girls out, they swim hard for the money.
