Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming up and if you haven't booked/purchased yet, you may be in for a steep charge.  I mean, going to Des Moines might still be cheap, but c'mon, who wants to go there?

If you haven't purchased holiday airline tickets, you should prepare for sticker shock.

Fares are higher to most destinations, and if you are looking at a sunny destination such as Hawaii, the Caribbean or Mexico, or a ski destination such as Vail or Aspen, be prepared to empty your wallet.

Thanksgiving fares are a mixed bag, depending on where you want to go.

If you can extend the holiday and depart Thanksgiving Day and return in the middle of the following week, you can find reasonable fares.

You should try to avoid return flights on Sunday, Nov. 25.
